The best restaurant reviews are always very direct in their communication about their entire experience, starting with which dish they chose, how the dish tasted, how the customer service was, and how the overall environment felt.
A good review is not ambiguous but is a precise description that ends with a clear recommendation. It will address both the good and the bad of the restaurant while sharing actual experiences without faking anything.
In this article, we will share some review examples that you can simply copy and paste, show you the review writing formula, and explain how to get consistent reviews for your business.
What Makes a Good Restaurant Review? The DISH Formula
A review that doesn’t have any details about the complete restaurant experience does not help the reader form an opinion or make a decision about the restaurant. Any good restaurant review has some combination of these four things –
- D – Dish. It’s important to name the food that you ordered; When you write “Good Food”, it’s not enough to convince the reader to come and visit the restaurant.
- I – Impression. Add details about the construction of the dish. Was it crunchy? How was the texture? Did the plating impress you or remind you of something?
- S – Service & Setting. Service is as important for readers to know as the food. How the waiters behave and the atmosphere inside the restaurant help people decide whether the place is suited for them.
- H – Hook. You should end your review with a clear recommendation. You can mention which events the place might be good for and share your overall opinion of the restaurant experience.
All four of these together are called the DISH Formula. Let’s look at an example where we transform a vague review into a DISH version.

DISH Review: “The Chef’s Special Pasta had such a soft texture; the cheese was melting in my mouth. Our service made us feel very important; The decoration and lighting gave us a premium feel, and we’re planning to hold our meetings here from now on.”
